Celestun
Celestun is located at Mexico´s Gulf Coast about 50 kilometres away from Merida.
It is a small fishing village and is traded as a secret jewel. Though it is
not on the Caribbean, it has long wide white sandy beaches. There are already
some small hotels and a couple of 5 star hotels catering to eco tourism, and
also one or two hotels for the upscale - higher class. Because of the fast
connection to and from Merida you should include it in your roundtrip. You
will be able to enjoy beautiful nature and lovers of fresh fish and seafood
will find little stores and restaurants. Accomodations and food are still
very inexpensive. The prices for a double bed room start at USD 18. All year
round you can watch flamingos and other rare tropical birds. Between March
and August the pink fllamingos leave their nests to come to their feeding
grounds in Rio Largartos. You can reach Celestun by car if you take the road
from Merida to Uman, then pass Kinchil. Via local bus from Merida you reach
Celestun in about 2 hours. Those local busses leave Merida hourly starting
at 5 o´clock in the morning and the price for the ticket is about USD 3.
